US low-fare carrier Spirit Airlines has launched a new route between Birmingham, Alabama and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Flights will commence on 10 October 2024.

This route will also mark the first time that the airline serves the state of Alabama and will provide flight options to those in Florida and connections to Latin America and the Caribbean.

“We can’t wait to welcome aboard Birmingham travellers looking for both an affordable and convenient way to enjoy Fort Lauderdale’s beautiful beaches,” said John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines.

“This is a great day for our community,” added Darlene Wilson, Vice-Chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority Board. “Spirit Airlines is showing a tremendous amount of confidence in this market, and we are thrilled to have this new option available to travellers.”

Since its proposed merger with JetBlue was abandoned earlier in 2024, Spirit Airlines has been undergoing strategic changes in an attempt to boost revenue. In its Q1 results, its then-CFO Scott Haralson said that Spirit had already been “working in the background to prepare” should the merger not go ahead.

Changes mentioned included reducing near-term capacity, rightsizing the business’s resources, and reducing capacity to prepare for ‘phase two’ of a ‘go-forward evolution’.

It also announced a CFO change earlier in June, with the departure of Scott Haralson to welcome ex-American Airlines VP Brian McMenamy.
