Electric motor manufacturer, magniX, has launched Samson, its “game-changing” battery line, designed for the aviation industry – specifically enabling the viability of eVTOLs and future regional electric aircraft programs.

The Samson300 is the first in the battery product line, and is focused on maximising energy density for grater range and larger payloads.

The battery will be certifiable under aviation regulations, according to the company, whilst delivering “industry-leading energy density, unmatched lifestyle, and patented safety features.” It reportedly has the highest energy density in the industry so far at 300Wh/kg, and a battery cycle life of over 1,000 full-depth discharge cycles. It also has modular battery architecture to power larger aircraft, and allow for battery replacement.

“magniX’s Samson batteries represent a breakthrough for magniX and electric aviation,” said Ben Loxton, VP of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and the NASA Electric Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) Program at magniX.

“With the development of our Samson batteries, magniX can now offer customers a fully integrated electric powertrain, and it’s just the beginning. The roadmap to an energy density of 400Wh/kg or more is looking very promising. The future of flight is here, and it is being powered by magniX,” said Reed Macdonald, CEO.

The company is currently progressing towards a battery that contains 400Wh/kg energy density, with this latest news outlining a roadmap that is “looking very promising.”
